If your appliance is in your garage, please plan to be onsite when the driver calls you 15-45 minutes prior to pickup. If you do not plan to be onsite at the time of pickup, please leave appliance in an easily accessible location outside and also leave a note on the appliance that says, "I allow the Xcel Energy Refrigerator Recycling team to remove this appliance. Please do not take if you are not with that team."

To qualify, you must:

  • Be an Xcel Energy residential electric customer living in Minnesota.

    • Natural-gas only residential customers are not eligible.

  • Be the owner of the refrigerator or freezer being recycled.

  • Recycle no more than four working units per household, per program year.

Unit requirements for rebate:

  • Refrigerators and freezers must have been manufactured in 2021 or earlier.

  • Refrigerator or freezer must be between 10 and 30 cubic feet. Mini-fridges typically do not meet this capacity requirement to be eligible for participation.

  • Appliance must be in working order (e.g., cooling and/or freezing and the ability to make ice) and clean when inspected at the time of pickup.

  • Window/room AC units and dehumidifiers can be taken if a driver is scheduled to pickup a refrigerator or freezer. Please note: There are no rebates for window/room AC units or dehumidifiers.

  • Please do not put appliance(s) out until 12-24 hours before your pickup time.

    • Note that we are not liable if your appliance is picked up early by a third party. If you are worried that your appliance was stolen, please contact your local law enforcement.

  • Ensure there is a clear path to the appliance.

  • Check your appliance to make sure it is empty and free of food or mold.

  • Dehumidifier and window/room AC units can be taken if a driver is scheduled to pick up a refrigerator or freezer. Please note: There are no rebates for dehumidifiers or window/room AC units.

  • We reserve the right to decline pickup of any appliance if its removal may pose a safety risk to our team, the customer, or the property. Examples include (but are not limited to) top‑mounted compressor units that meet size requirements but are unusually heavy, as well as appliances located in basements or other areas with restricted access or exit points.

  • For outdoor pickup, make sure the appliance is located in one of the approved outdoor locations.
